There will be some maintenance on the BWR server on June 4th beginning around 11:00 pm. We've been told by the hosting company to expect 4-7 hours of downtime. Sorry for the inconvenience!

The September Support Stacie Author Auction will take place September 11-14, 2009.
It’s a multi-fandom auction, so if you have friends that write for GG or any other fandom, encourage them to sign up! Participating in the auction as an author, a bidder, or even a snarky spectator is great fun, and all proceeds help to offset medical expenses that our friend truelovepooh has incurred in her on-going battle against breast and ovarian cancer.
If you are an author and you would like to participate in the auction, please go to Support Stacie for the sign up form. The deadline for signing up as an author is September 4th. Information for bidders can also be found at that site. Hope to see you there!

A Fanfic-On-Demand fundraiser is in the works for friends of Stacie. The gist of the project is that authors in any fandom are invited to write a short fic on demand. The highest bidder gets to deliver the fic challenge to the author they’ve “won,” along with the story’s pairing, the rating, and other pertinent details (within reason and within the author’s stated fandom and limitations - i.e., some authors prefer not to write smut). The author will be given up to 30 days to finish the fic, beginning with the day that payment is received. Details are on supportstacie.net If you are interested in being one of the authors, please check out the site and submit the author form! This will be a fun project designed to challenge the author and entertain their fans while raising money for a great cause.

This is just to let everyone know that I'm going to be away from internet for a few days, so there won't be any validation at BWR while I'm gone. I'm leaving Monday morning (8/4) and I'll be back Thursday evening (8/7). I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I'll try to get caught up as quickly as possible when I get back. Thank you in advance for your patience.

We've been having some problems with outgoing emails from BWR showing up blank. In order to assist us in tracking down the problem, it would be really helpful if you could let us know when you receive blank emails. Just reply to any blank emails and let us know your penname and anything you can about the circumstances of the email. Thanks so much for the help!

This is just a heads up that validation will be slow during Memorial Day weekend. I'm away and without internet. I might be able to check in once a day, but I can't guarantee that. Thank you for your patience.

I hated to do it, but I've had to disable anonymous reviews due to some weird spam issues we've been having. That means, in order to leave a review you must be signed in.
If you're not a member, creating an account is easy. Just follow the "Log In" link from the main menu, or go here.

Happy new season!
I got an e-mail from an author letting me know that they were getting some weird/spammy reviews. Basically, it's all gibberish with links to porn sites. If you've noticed anything weird like that in your reviews, or more importantly in your stories, please let me know by responding here or e-mailing me at admin[at]gilmore-fiction[dot]net. Be sure to include a link to your story/review.
As always, don't follow any strange links if you see them. I don't think we've been hacked, but I wanto make sure I know what's going on.

Many of our readers and writers are unspoiled. Please do not mention any information or details about the seventh season in your reviews, until that information has been publicly aired in an episode.
This includes even general information about the season as a whole. Please respect readers and writers who choose to be spoiler-free.

There have been some questions about the 'current spoilers' warning, so we wanted to post a clarification. The 'current spoilers' warning is only to be used for fics that contain spoilers for unaired episodes.
In stories that contain spoilers, the summary should say 'SPOILERS' and indicate which episodes the spoilers are from. That way readers can see that there are spoilers before they even open the story. Authors should also include a note about spoilers in the author's note at the top of the text of the story (in case the story gets linked without a spoiler warning).
Any stories that contain spoilers and do not have these warnings will be rejected until the warnings are added.
Spoilers for season seven are starting to come out, so it's a good time for another reminder about spoilers.
Authors - if your story contains spoilers for unaired episodes, be sure to state that clearly in the summary. Adding an authors note at the top of the text would be helpful as well. You should also specify which episodes the spoilers include (i.e. 7.01, 7.02, etc.).
Reviewers - DO NOT leave reviews that include spoilers or reactions to spoilers in non-spoiler fic. Also, if a fic contains spoilers for 7.01, don't leave a review that gives away spoilers for 7.02.
Finally, please remember that reactions to spoilers can be just as revealing as the spoilers themselves. Let's all do our best not to spoil anyone who doesn't want to know what's coming up on the show. Thanks!

I've redone the security upgrade, and everything should be working again. I'm so sorry for the downtime on new validations. Who knew I would have an unexpected three day "vacation" in the hospital before the baby came?
The validation queue is pretty full, so give us some time to work through it. Also, let me know if anything is wonky. Thanks for your patience!

JeSouhaite was planning to fix the site upgrade today, but instead it looks like she'll be welcoming a new member into her family! The site will probably not be fixed until some time early next week. Until that time, new fics will not be validated.
If you have any questions in the meantime, please email me instead of JeSouhaite-- emily at healthyinterest dot net.

It's time to add a few security upgrades to the script. Please bear with me as I install them (and cross your fingers that nothing gets screwed up). Thanks!
ETA: Well, the upgrades are done and we seem to have come out okay. Let me know if anything is acting funky.
ETA2: I've figured out the problem with the validation. I need to reupload the upgrade. Unfortunately, I'm on the wrong computer for that. In addition, I try not to update the script when I'm this tired. *g* I'll do it in the morning. Until then, we won't be able to validate any fics. Hold tight!

I've been getting quite a few e-mails, so I wanted to proactively thank you all for your patience over the next few weeks.
As you may or may not know, I'll be having a baby soon. It's also coming on summer, which means many of our admins are taking vacations, traveling, etc. It's a busy time for those of us behind the scenes at BWR!
We are doing our best to keep up with the validation queue, but there are times when it may be several days or even a week until a story is validated. Please give us at least 3 days to validate a story before e-mailing to ask when it will be validated.
Thanks again to everyone who helps make this site what it is. And thank you for your patience!

I'm in the process of upgrading to the latest version of eFiction, and managed to reset a bunch of things to their default settings. Bear with me as I sort everything out! I should be done by the end of the evening.

Spoilers for the end of season 6 are starting to come out, and I thought it would be a good idea to remind everyone to be respectful of our spoiler-free friends here at BWR.
Authors - if your story contains spoilers for unaired episodes, be sure to clearly state that in the summary. Adding an authors note at the top of the text would be helpful as well. You might also think about specifying which episodes the spoilers include (i.e. rest of season 6, only 6.19, only 6.20, etc.).
Reviewers - DO NOT leave reviews that include spoilers or reactions to spoilers in non-spoiler fic. Also, if a fic contains spoilers for 6.20, don't leave a review that gives away spoilers for 6.22.
Finally, please remember that reactions to spoilers can be just as revealing as the spoilers themselves. Let's all do our best not to spoil anyone who doesn't want to know what's coming up on the show. Thanks!

That's right, Black & White & Read was launched one year ago today. What a year it has been! I couldn't let the day pass without saying a huge "thank you" to everyone who has helped make this archive a success: the fabulous staff who keep the site running, the 236 authors who have posted close to 900 stories, and the readers who have posted over 13,000 reviews.
You all have made BWR the community it is, so I hope you'll join me in saying "Happy Birthday!"

I believe we've discovered the culprit behind the "403 Forbidden" errors some people are getting when trying to post/edit stories. It's a combination of security at the server and the script that runs this site. Certain words in stories ("curl" being one of them) run into a security measure designed to stop hackers, which then causes the script to die. The result is the 403 error.
If you get the 403 Forbidden error, save your story as a plain text file and upload it as a file (not by copying and pasting the text). Add the story without previewing it. That should do the trick. If you still have problems, e-mail me.
I've been contacted by many of you about this, so I wanted to address it.
People are randomly getting "403 Forbidden" errors when adding or editing stories. I have no idea why it's happening, or how to fix it. I've posted at the eFiction forum so that hopefully someone can help me figure it out. I'm not sure it's related to the hacking, because a couple of authors (myself included) started having trouble a few weeks ago.
In the meantime, there are a few ways that have worked around the error. If you get it while adding a new story, try uploading the chapter as a text file instead of cutting and pasting into the text box. If you get it when previewing a chapter, try adding without previewing (you can always edit after it's added). If you get it when trying to edit an existing chapter, delete the chapter and reupload it. It will bump the story to the top of the recently added list, but folks will understand.
Again, I'm really sorry for all of the hassle. Hopefully, we'll be able to fix this soon.

I found out yesterday we've been hacked. It doesn't look like too much damage was done, but if you find parts of stories or parts of chapters missing, that's probably why. If you do notice part of a story missing, let the author know so that they can reupload what got deleted. Authors - I'd suggest you check all of your stories to make sure they're all there and edit them if they need to be edited.
Also, if you see strange links anywhere (including in stories) please let me know so that I can delete them. DON'T FOLLOW ANY STRANGE SOUNDING LINKS. It could lead to a virus or spyware. If it doesn't look like it belongs, it probably doesn't. You can just reply to this news item or e-mail me with a link to the page with the screwy link. Authors, if you find a strange link in your story, please feel free to delete it yourself, or let me know it's there.

It's that time of year again - time for last minute shopping, frantically trying to write Christmas cards, and all sorts of travel.
Because it is such a busy time of year, we appreciate your patience with us. Please don't be concered if stories you submit aren't validated immediately. We promise to get to them! It just might take a little longer than usual.
Whether you celebrate Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Solstice, or a different holiday, we wish you all the best and happiness in the New Year!

The move to the new server is done, so post as usual!
I think everything went pretty seamlessly, but if you encounter any problems, let me know. I do know that some characters, such as smart quotes, are now showing up as garbage. There's so way for me to fix it on my end, so if you're an author, check your stories and fix any strange characters that are showing up.

Firefox/Netscape users - if the layout looks strange to you, try clearing your cache and then reload the page. It might be pulling an old style sheet.

That went...surprisingly well. After the initial glitch that had me on the verge of tears.
I'm still tweaking the layout and some other things, but the archive itself is up and running. If you find any bugs, please report them in a comment to this item.

I'm getting ready to run the upgrade. The site is going to stay live for a little while longer while I run a back-up. However, no new fics will be accepted from now until the upgrade is done. New users should probably wait to register as well, just in case.
Once the back-up is done, I'm going to take the site down while I upgrade. It probably won't be back until tomorrow.
Cross your fingers and say lots of prayers!

Within the next week or so, I'm going to be upgrading the site to the newest version of the eFiction script. It's possible that BWR might be down for several days while that happens. Also, the site might have a strange or generic skin for a while until I can get our pretty black, white, and read skin together in the new system.
I'm going to try to keep down time and disruption of the site to a minimum, but please be patient as we go through the process. Thanks!

Most of the BWR staffers are getting ready to go celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, which means that we'll have limited time online over the next few days with which to validate your fics. Please don't be concerned if you submit a story that isn't immediately validated--we'll get to it as soon as we finish eating!
We're wishing all of you the happiest of Thanksgivings!

We've had quite a few submissions lately with incorrect dialogue punctuation, so I thought I'd post a quick reminder about it. Dialogue should be punctuated like this:
"I'm going to the store," she said.
or
"Do you need anything from the store?" asked Rory.
Here are two helpful links: Professor Logan Teaches about Quotation Marks and DangerMom's Grammar Guide. Hope this helps!

If you submit a songfic, please make sure there is more fic than song. Quoting a few lines is acceptable - the whole song, not so much.

Just a quick note: stories with an author's note to the effect of "I won't post the next chapter until I get x many reviews" won't be validated.

If you haven't been yet, be sure to check out the master list of entries for the Luke/Lorelai Ficathon. Many are posted here at BWR, but there some up at other places. Lots of good reading to be found!
Thanks to our very own CIAChick for organizing such a great ficathon.

The entries for the Lukesmut Ficathon are being posted. The deadline for all stories is July 8th, though I suspect some will be coming a tad late. Most of the stories are posted here, but some are only in the author's livejournal.
Head over the the master list of stories and read the awesome entries. Be sure to check back over the next few days as the final stories are posted!

Please try not to rate individual chapters of a fic with different ratings. If one chapter of the fic is Adult, the whole fic should be rated Adult. It's misleading to readers when they start a story rated PG and don't realize chapter 2 is Adult. At the very least, the first chapter should reflect the highest rating of the fic, since that is the rating that appears on the main page.
Admins will change the ratings of stories so that they are accurate.

Please do *not* use HTML in your story summaries. It has a tendency to mess up the formatting of the entire front page. Thank you!

I'm thrilled to announce the opening of a sister site for B&W&R: Fundamental Things. . . Applied.
Since B&W&R does retain the right to reject stories for grammatical, spelling, and formatting mistakes, we figured it was only fair to provide some resources for writers in need of information and beta services.
One of the primary features of Fundamental Things. . . Applied is a Beta Reader Index. Every story could benefit from a second set of eyes, and we'd like to have someplace to send people when they ask us "Where can I find a beta?". If you're interested in volunteering to beta, it's very simple. Please take a moment to sign up - we really want to see that list grow!

I finally got it to work! If you add a story to your favorites list and the author updates it, you will get an e-mail announcement that one of your favorite stories has been updated (complete with the story title and chapter title). This is a great feature if you're following works-in-progress. To add a story to your favorites, simply click "add to favorites" at the top of any chapter of the story. If your favorite authors aren't archiving their works-in-progress at BWR, now would be a great time to encourage them to start!
I'm also working on another modification that would send an e-mail announcement when an author on your favorites list submits a new story. This one's a lot trickier, so stay tuned.

I just want to say a quick "thank you" to everyone who has uploaded their stories, registered, and/or spread the word about BWR. 102 members and 186 stories in two weeks is simply amazing to me. So, thank you!

As some of you may have discovered, the option to upload your story as a .doc, .txt, or .html file sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I'm trying to determine why that is happening, but haven't had any luck so far.
If you are having trouble with the file upload option, the best way to add your story is by copying and pasting text into the story text (text) box. You can use html tags to make text bold or italics. If you need help on adding html tags, just send me an e-mail and I'll be happy to walk you through it.
I apologize for the incovenience.

I've added an RSS feed for the archive. It will allow you to syndicate fic updates on your livejournal, blog, etc. I would suggest waiting a few days, as authors, the other admins, and I are furiously uploading older fics. Once the archive catches up, a syndicated feed is a great way to be notified of new story updates.
You can find a link to the raw XML here. If you have a livejournal, go to this page and add the journal there to your friends list.

I am very excited to say that Black & White & Read is open for business! Please register, upload, and review! If you run into any problems or have any questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail me.
If you head over to the site info page, you'll see why we started this archive. Our goal is to create one large repository for all GG fanfic, such as
the Gossamer (X-Files) or Cover Me (Alias) archives. You can help us do that by archiving your fic here (after you've read the submission guidelines, of course). Even more, you can spread the word to your friends - let them know we're here and we'd love to have them!
